Palace hails House panel's vote for Sereno's ouster
Malacañang hails the result of the voting today by the members of the House Committee that found probable cause to impeach Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque says, this proves that the legal process and the principle of accountability in government are working.
The House Justice Committee voted 38-2 in favor of impeachment.
The two lawmakers who voted against the finding of probable cause were Quezon City 6th District Representative Jose Christopher Belmonte and Dinagat Island Representative Arlene Bag-ao.
Oriental Mindoro Representative Reynaldo Umali said they have gathered enough evidence to give them "ammunition to prosecute this case to victory."
Umali did not cast his vote.
Under the rules, the committee chairman only joins the voting when there is a tie.
One of Sereno's spokespersons, Attorney Carlo Cruz, says the outcome of the voting by the House panel will enable them to elevate the matter to the Senate where the chief justice can defend herself.
Sereno's camp is expecting the impeachment trial to take place in July or August this year.
