Cause to party

by by Ed Biado

What are the chances that a big hall can be filled with thousands of clubbers on a Tuesday night? Tuesday isn’t a club night; in fact, it’s the least likely weekday for a night out. So when Bigfish announced that a Tuesday gig was in the works, one can’t help but think, “Can they pull this off—especially just mere days after Ondoy?” But when one of the Mama Earth’s biggest DJs summons, can you possibly say no?

Only a handful of names have the influence to draw a crowd on an off night—Tiesto, Armin, Kaskade, Guetta, Above & Beyond—and Manila’s nocturnalists heeded the call of one Paul van Dyk, two-time top DJ of the world.

The A.Venue Events Hall quickly filled up with electronic music lovers in the final minutes of Oct. 13, which kicked the temperature up a few more degrees. The opening set, masterfully spun by Johnboy Lee, was a hit with the early birds from the get-go. Deep into the night, as elbow room started to become almost nonexistent, his beats intensified, as if purposely telling everyone that van Dyk’s entrance is a few music bars away.

As part of his world tour, PVD made sure that the air-conditioning wouldn’t be strong enough to cool down the heat of his intense set, diving right into a steady up-tempo beat. He slammed track after track of sheer trance goodness. He rode on a thump-driven progression of multi-layered synthesized instruments, teasing the crowd with his trademark builds and major transitions.

Who cared it was a work-slash-school night? People were dancing their asses off to every lick, riff and pierce that the phenomenal DJ was offering, all the while, sipping on different mixes of Bacardi, the night’s official drink.

It’s quite historic, actually, and every clubber present should be proud to be a part of it. PVD, whose sets are said to be priced in the seven-digit figures, donated his fee to efforts in aid of Ondoy’s victims—a heartwarming piece of news that Bigfish publicized and documented well by posting pictures of their relief operations on their Facebook page.

With immense talent and creativity and a heart of gold, how could we have said no to PVD?
