The Hollywood Awards Gala is a signal that award season is, once again, upon the American movie industry. It’s a pre-Oscar event that’s a good gauge on how the Oscars itself will be. And as always, all eyes are on the red carpet, where all the fashions are. Here’s a look at the stars and who they’re wearing:
1. Looking smoking in a one-shoulder number, AnnaLynne McCord rocks a pony ‘do, simple muted paint and elongated earrings. The focus is all on her dress, which brought much-needed glam to the Gala. The lacey black-on-black embellishments took the outfit to the top of the best dressed list.
2. Carey Mulligan looks top-heavy in this Spring 2010 dress from Prabal Gurung. Maybe the proportions aren’t right (two inches longer, maybe) or the boring sandals don’t work (something more red carpet-y, perhaps). Either way, her up-do didn’t help.
3. When Charlize Theron walks down the red carpet, you know you’re in for a treat. She’s like a chameleon of style. Were you as sorely disappointed as I was when she opted to go “default” at the Gala? Don’t get me wrong, the simplicity of her strapless top and short skirt is commendable. It’s just too… simple.
4. The soft and easy white Narciso Rodriguez dress is fabulous on the runway. But on Diane Kruger, it’s a weird mess. It’s too long for her and the waist is not cinched enough. And those peachy nude heels wash out the look even more. Something eye-popping would’ve been better.
5. Another runway-to-red-carpet look is donned by Hilary Swank. This one is from the Fall collection of Monique Lhuillier. Thankfully, Hilary did the dress justice. But what’s with the I-can’t-afford-a-hairdresser ‘do?
6. Julianne Moore was like a breath of fresh air in an age- and skin tone-appropriate knee-length dress. The poufy shoulders were good, the platforms were divine and her overall styling was among the best on the red carpet.
7. Taking cues from the catalog’s styling, Kate Beckinsale wore a Michael Kors resort look with the right amount of accessories. And it served her well. The sleek ‘do complemented the asymmetry of the dress and the shoes made sure it didn’t look too busy.
8. Michelle Monaghan broke up the monotony of her all-black look (albeit with hints of white) with bright lips—a smart move. But the one-sided hair was too calculated. She should’ve gone for a more easygoing style. The dress, however, was perfect with its restrained details.
9. Was she trying to be the next member of the Pussycat Dolls? Tajari P. Henson was over the top with the structured and very shiny mini and too much hair. And I can’t even begin to dissect her makeup.
10. A Baby Spice-looking ensemble (complete with bow accent, tights and quirky heels) may be a stretch for many starlets, but it seemed to work on Zooey Deschanel. I don’t know why but it just does. But again, this isn’t a very awards ceremony getup.
