| Radioman critical after getting shot
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—A radio presenter was fighting for his life in hospital on Friday after being shot, the latest media figure to be targeted in the country, police and reports said. Nilo Labares, head reporter at dxCC-Radio Mindanao Network, was shot twice in the chest late Thursday by two masked gunmen who then sped off. Police said Labares was in a critical condition in hospital after the shooting in Cagayan de Oro. Labares, 47, had received a threat on his cell phone two weeks ago warning him not to continue his radio station’s campaign against illegal gambling in the area, the station’s news chief Rey Maraunay told Agence France-Presse. The injured journalist, who is married and has worked for the station for more than 10 years, is also editor-in-chief of a local weekly paper called Sports and News, Maraunay said. President Arroyo had told police “to leave no stone unturned to ensure justice is done and identify the killers,” her press secretary Cerge Remonde said. AFP |
