| Suspect in Dacer-Corbito murder may turn state witness, Justice says
By Rey E. Requejo FORMER police officer Cesar Mancao II will identify the alleged mastermind behind the killing of publicist Salvador ?Bubby? Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito eight years ago. Representing Dacer?s daughter Karina, lawyer Demy Custodio said Mancao, who has been detained in the United States, would be back to the Philippines in three weeks? time to testify against the people behind the double murder case. Custodio said Mancao had already executed a sworn affidavit last Feb. 14 containing all that he knows about the case, including those who ordered the killings. He added the affidavit was filed at the Federal District Court in Fort Lauderdale in Florida when Mancao testified that he was no longer contesting the government?s request for his extradition. Custodio refused to divulge the details of the said affidavit but said ?members of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force were mentioned.? Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez yesterday said Mancao may turn state witness in the prosecution of the suspects in the Dacer-Corbito murder case. Gonzalez raised this possibility after Mancao, one of the suspects in the Dacer-Corbito killing, expressed willingness to identify the mastermind in the murders. Mancao is expected to be extradited from the US in the next two weeks, along with another suspect, former police Senior Supt. Glenn Dumlao. ?He [Mancao] may qualify as state witness,? Gonzalez said. When asked what made Mancao decide to help the government, Gonzalez said: ?Conscience may be bothering him so he wants to speak the truth now what he knows or he might have felt abandoned in America by people who wanted him to go on exile.? |
