Hatton can?t outbox Pacman, says Roach

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

MANNY Pacquiao?s trainer Freddie Roach believes that Ricky Hatton?s aggression will be his downfall in their ?Battle of East and West? at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 2.

?It will be a great fight in the first half but Manny will get to him in the later rounds and knock him out at some point,? said Roach.

The celebrated trainer told Gavin Glicksman of The Sun newspaper in London, that while Hatton is resilient, ?his come forward nature will walk him into some shots and that will get him out of there.?

While conceding that the 30-year-old Hatton has been rejuvenated by the excellent training skills of Floyd Mayweather Sr., Roach believes that not even the experienced trainer can teach the British champ anything new. ?You can?t teach an old dog new tricks.?

Roach told The Sun correspondent: ?I don?t think you can change Ricky at this point in his career. Once he gets hit, he?ll lose composure and revert to what he does best, and that?s fight. Ricky talks about having worked on his defense and head movement, but he is what he is. He?s been doing this for a long time.?

He said he is sure Mayweather Sr., assistant trainer Lee Beard and Hatton himself will have a game plan going into the fight. ?But after the first round, he?ll go back to his natural style, which is pure aggression and moving forward. This may be good for Hatton in some ways because that?s the best shot he?s got at beating Manny.?

Roach, who was with Pacquiao in his promotional tour of Manchester and London, said that if Hatton tries to outbox the Pacman, and fights like Mayweather Sr. teaches, he?ll lose.

He made it clear that Mayweather Sr. teaches one way and one way only?and that?s not suited for Hatton. ?He?d be foolish to try and outbox Manny.?
