Another Customs official flunks lifestyle check

ANOTHER Customs official is facing charges for amassing P60 million in unexplained wealth over the past 38 years, the Finance Department said yesterday.

Visitacion Difuntorum started as a clerical aide in 1971 and now claims a net worth of P130,000, but she has been able to buy parcels of land in Quezon City, Tarlac and Northern Samar and several vehicles, according to Romeo Tomas Jr., executive director of the Finance Department’s Revenue Integrity Protection Service.

He said Difuntorum had three houses in Quezon City, a hotel and a restaurant in Northern Samar, and a piece of agricultural land in Tarlac.

She also had two Mitsubishi Pajero sport utility vehicles and two Honda cars worth P3 million, not counting a Toyota Prado, a BMW, a Ford Escape, and a Toyota Vios registered under the names of relatives, Tomas said.

“The respondent’s brazen accumulation of wealth in the aggregate amount of P60 million more or less is clearly disproportionate to her means,” Tomas said.

“Respondent did not even include her ordinary family expenditures,” he said. Lawrence Agcaoili
