| Donaire-Martinez title fight is off
By Ronnie Nathanielsz THE planned championship double-header headlined by world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire?s title defense against undefeated Raul Martinez that was reset from March 22 to April 19, is finally off, according to the champ?s manager Cameron Dunkin. ?I don?t know what?s going on, but my boxer [Donaire] has been training for two months and this is the fourth time the date has been changed. This time, it?s a radical change and I am not going keep him in the fight. No way,? Dunkin told www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports. Dunkin said he had serious doubts whether Solar Sports, which partnered Top Rank promoter Bob Arum in the planned double championship card at the Araneta Coliseum with former World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Brian Viloria challenging International Boxing Federation champion Ulises Solis for his title, will go through with the card. Dunkin pointed to the fact that the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton showdown was on May 2. ?Any sponsor money would go into that fight and nobody is going to come and see this fight.? Donaire?s manager said he had spoken to Arum, who also felt very sorry about what had happened and they were planning to talk again after the press conference of Pacquiao and Hatton in London to try and find a suitable date and maybe another opponent for the Filipino champ, either in the US or even Mexico. He said Arum has a few dates for fight cards where he may be able to schedule Donaire even as Dunkin said he was trying to work out something with the Top Rank promoter to see whether his ward could fight on the Julio Cesar Chavez card in Tijuana on March 28. |
