Legacy helped lawmaker?s projects

PARA?AQUE Rep. Eduardo Zialcita yesterday said the Legacy Group, accused of swindling thousands of bank depositors and plan holders of its pre-need firms, had supported several of his projects but denied any involvement in it.

There are claims that Zialcita received P100,000 a month in consultancy fees from Legacy Group owner Celso de los Angeles, who is also mayor of Sto. Domingo in Albay, from 2006 to October 2008.

In a statement e-mailed to reporters, Zialcita admitted that Angeles and his group had supported some of his programs, including free burial and a feeding program for the poor.

?Let me state that Mr. Angeles and his Group are only one among many corporate and individual donors that have supported, and continue to support, programs for the underprivileged in the First District of Para?aque,? Zialcita said.

He could not say exactly how much he had received from De los Angeles and his group because they were still collating documents.

?I don?t have the exact figure, but we?re looking into it now,? he said over the telephone.

?At the proper time, in the correct forum, I reserve my right to show, to all and sundry, the detailed records pertaining to these donations,? he said.

He insisted that De los Angeles had asked no favors in return. Roy Pelovello
