Stunners keep quarterfinal bid alive

NATIONAL Collegiate Athletic Association star Ogie Menor finally produced the numbers befitting his status as Burger King got back at Hapee Toothpaste, 72-59, in the 2009 Philippine Basketball League PG Flex Linoleum Cup yesterday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The San Beda ace sizzled in the final half, scoring 16 points to finish the game with 21?his biggest production in the league so far.

The former NCAA Finals Most Valuable Player was ably supported by Mac Baracael, who scored 17 markers as the Stunners improved their record to 4-7 to keep their quarterfinal bid alive.

The loss dropped the Complete Protectors to solo fourth with a 5-6 record.

The Stunners were hot in the third period, where they exploded for 25 points giving them a commanding 56-33 lead going into the final 10 minutes.

Their defense was also impressive that they held the Complete Protectors to just four points in the second quarter where Burger King posted a 31-23 lead.

Menor hit 9-of-13 shots from the field that went along with five rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes of action, while Baracael made 6-of-10 baskets in 29 minutes of action.

?This game was great because we had a badly depleted lineup but I told them to forget all we have done in the past,? said Burger King head coach Allan Gregorio.

Jason Nocom, a 6?6? center, also stepped up big with 15 points, nine of them in the second, on 6-of-10 shooting in 22 minutes.

The Stunners played minus Khiel Misa and Nestor David, who are returning to the Pampanga Buddies of Liga Pilipinas, and injured big men Abby Santos and block shots leader Jason Ballesteros.

?It was a defensive adjustment that we made,? said Gregorio. ?The interior game of Jervy Cruz was missing up until the third quarter because we were able to double-team him.?

Though he struggled in the face of BK?s tough defense, the 6?4? Cruz still finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.

In the other game, Toyota Otis also scored vengeful 97-75 win over Magnolia Purewater, ending a three-game losing run.
