Diaz wants to fight Ganoy

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

FORMER World Boxing Council lightweight champion David Diaz (34-2-1, 17 KOs) said he?d love to fight in Manila International Boxing Federation Pan Pacific Sydney-based champion Ranee Ganoy (25-11-2, 21 KOs).

Danny Coyne, the co-manager of Ganoy, who, like Diaz, lost his last fight, said his ward was hoping that a fight against the former Mexican champ could be included on the blockbuster, double-championship fight card put together by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, in cooperation with Solar Sports, at the Araneta Coliseum on March 15.

Coyne said that despite suffering a fourth-round TKO loss to American Fernando Angulo last Dec. 5 in an International Boxing Federation title eliminator in South Africa, Ganoy was ?itching to get back in the ring and really thinks he can beat Diaz.?

In the featured bout, IBF/International Boxing Organization flyweight champion Nonito Donaire will move up in weight to challenge World Boxing Organization super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel.

In the other title fight, former World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Brian Viloria will seek to regain the title in a clash with IBF champion Ulises Solis who, like Montiel, is also from Mexico.

Diaz spoke to www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports from Chicago, where he was celebrating his mother?s birthday with family and friends.

?Oh wow. That would be awesome. If they back it up that would be great and I would take it,? said Diaz in reaction to a possible Manila fight in March.

Diaz said he had started light training, but took a break for the Christmas holidays but resumed training yesterday.

?Hopefully, it works out right and we?ll be able to go in March.?
