| Burger King?s options open
By Rey Joble WHEN Air21 changes its name to Burger King, expect possible changes either from player personnel to coaching staff. That?s the reason why anyone from coaches like Yeng Guiao, Junel Baculi and George Gallent might beef up Burger King?s coaching staff and help out Bo Perasol beginning next conference. ?Anything is possible. We will do anything to help improve our team,? said Air21 president and team manager Lito Alvarez told Standard Today. The Express were eliminated in the ongoing KFC-Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup by the San Miguel Beermen following the latter?s 105-86 rout victory Sunday at the Big Dome. Instead of pouting over their early exit, Alvarez is looking forward to having a brighter future in the Reinforced Conference, where they expect to carry a new name. ?We have already expressed our intentions to change our name and PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said they will present it to their legal department to study whether a transfer fee will be needed,? said Alvarez. ?I expect this thing to be tackled as well in the coming board meeting.? In changing their name, Alvarez, likewise, is hoping for a change of fortunes. He mulled the possibility of beefing up the squad from the roster of players and even the coaching staff. ?Coach Yeng is a great coach and could become a welcome addition to any team. Malaking bagay siya. If Burger King makes an offer to him and magkakasundo-sundo kami, then he can immediately become a part of our team. But then again, we are not the only one who will decide on this. There?s Mikee [Romero], one of our business partners, who also has coaches like Baculi and Gallent in his team in the PBL and there?s Manny Pangilinan and Ricky Vargas. So we will all decide whatever is best for the team,? added Alvarez. Guiao parted ways with Red Bull, a team he handled for nearly nine years. Baculi is ripe enough to join the pro league while Gallent has been successful as coach of the Batang Pier in the Philippine Basketball League. Perasol, being a corporate executive with The Lina Group, who is still the majority stakeholder in Burger King, could either stay as head coach or a member of the coaching staff depending on the decision of the stakeholders. Alvarez also disclosed that there?s a possibility Romero might become his alternate governor in the PBA once the transfer has been approved. ?That?s a possibility because Mr. Bert Lina cannot become my alternate governor and so is Mr. Pangilinan and Mr. Vargas dahil identified sila sa Talk N Text,? said Alvarez. |
