Healthiest packaged foods

By Ed Biado

There?s still a lot more information on the best and worst foods in America in the Men?s Health (US) feature that The Daily 10 excerpted from last week. Today, I?m compiling 10 items from the David Zinczenko/Matt Goulding list that can be found here in the Philippines, although not in all supermarkets. Please note that this is based on products on retail in the Untied States and that it may only apply if you?re shopping in the imported foods section.

1. Best orange juice?Tropicana with Calcium and Vitamin D. With the obvious inclusion of calcium and Vitamin D, this contains a healthy dose of Vitamin C, barely 110 calories and 26-grams carbs.

2. Best instant cereal?Quaker Weight Control Banana Bread Oatmeal. A serving will give you 160 calories, 3-grams fat, 7-grams protein, 29-grams carbs, 6-grams fiber and only 1-gram sugar.

3. Best ketchup?Heinz Organic. The regular Heinz is not bad, but since we?re talking ?healthiest,? the ?organic? part should be your cue. Aside from that, a tablespoon only has 20 calories and 5-grams fat.

4. Best cooking oil?Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Olive oil is healthier than other oils and this one is the best one to use for everyday cooking. A tablespoon is equivalent to 120 calories and 14-grams fat.

5. Best potato chip?Kettle Brand Krinkle Cut Chips Salt & Fresh Ground. With an ounce only containing 150 calories and 9-grams fat, this also has 2-grams protein, 16-grams carbs and 2-grams fiber.

6. Best chocolate sauce?Nestl? Nesquick Chocolate Syrup. Per two tablespoons on your ice cream only adds 100 calories and 25-grams carbs.

7. Best syrup?Smucker?s Sugar Free. A quarter cup of this syrup only has 8-grams and 20 calories. Other syrups have more than double the number of calories, so this is your best bet.

8. Best butter?Lurpak. One tablespoon (or just about the amount that is needed to generously spread on a slice of bread) corresponds to 100 calories and 11-grams fat. Those numbers are lower than other brands.

9. Best cream cheese?Kraft Philadelphia Light. A serving of two tablespoons contains 70 calories, 5-grams fat, 2-grams protein and 2-grams carbs. The regular non-?light? variant significantly has more calories and fat, so be sure what you?re picking up from the shelves.

10. Best beer?Guinness Draught. Most beers have similar compositions, but this one is a tad better than others because it has the least calories: 125.
