| Drug-test extortion lands clerk in hot water
A Land Transportation Office clerk at the agency’s branch in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, was arrested on Thursday for alleged extortion. Authorities entrapped up 31-year-old Jovann Mendiola, a resident of 24 Adrian St., North Fairview, on a complaint by Lynn Alegre, owner of La Bio Drug Testing Center. The complainant, an engineer who runs an accredited facility, said Mendiola was forcing her to pay P1,200 daily to hasten the processing of her papers. Also, the suspect required Alegre to fork up P30 per client, said a report from the QC Police Station 7. Alegre said 25 to 30 people would go to her laboratory for tests daily and that she has been coming across to avoid further delays for sometime. “I could not bear it anymore... My business has already suffered losses.” When the clerk demanded P1,200 every day, Alegre was fed up and sought the help of the police. In a sting operation around 4:30 p.m. at 173 20th Ave. in Cubao, Mendiola shrugged off the allegations, insisting he would not sully his five years of government service for a meager amount. He faces extortion charges and other administrative cases. Joel M. Sy Egco |
