| Flash floods dislocate thousands
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY?Nine people have died and nearly 200,000 have been displaced in flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain across the Philippines, relief officials said Wednesday. Nine other people were missing, while two others had been injured, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said. In Manila, an airport official said all flights to Cagayan de Oro and Butuan remained suspended as a result of the bad weather in Mindanao. Philippine Airlines had canceled six flights and Cebu Pacific two, said Alfonso Cusi, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority. The Coast Guard said 2,400 passengers were stranded in various ports in Bicol after it suspended sea travel there due to strong winds and rough seas. Thirty-eight buses, 59 trucks, 158 cars and three vessels were also stranded, Coast Guard Chief Wilfredo Tamayo said. The tail of a cold front sweeping through the Philippines? eastern seaboard had brought heavy rain across 11 provinces from northern Luzon to the eastern section of southern Mindanao island since last week, the Disaster Council said. The agency said 37,889 families or about 191,586 people had been affected. Parts of Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental remain submerged, while continuing heavy rains have forced a cancellation of air services by small domestic carriers. Schools also remain closed, while swollen rivers in Agusan del Norte province led to flooding. Storm surges were also reported in many coastal areas. There were reports of landslides and flooding in Bicol, while small motorized fishing vessels capsized near Capiz in the central Visayan region. ?What have I done wrong that this happened to my family?? said Edwin Sumahan, whose family was among hundreds evacuated from Isla Delta, a small island straddling the swollen Cagayan de Oro river. Zenaida Emiliano said her family had to flee to higher ground for the second time in a week due to the floods. ?We just returned home. We did not sleep last night due to incessant rain,? she sighed as the rising water crept into her home. AFP with Vito Barcelo and Joel E. Zurbano |
