Making connections

By Marane A. Plaza

A well-preserved heritage, unspoiled diverse ethnic lifestyles and unbelievably rich ecosystems have made Laos one of the most exotic destinations in Southeast Asia.

And now, Laos, or Lao People?s Democratic Republic opens its doors to Filipino travelers as it introduces Lao Airlines to the Philippines, giving Filipino tourists a more convenient way of visiting ??The Land of a Million Elephants??.

?We [Laos and the Philippines] have always had a democratic relationship since 1952, when Filipinos were popular in our country [Laos] especially in the field of medicine. Through the launching of Lao Airlines, greater opportunities for tourism for both countries will be opened,?? says Lao Ambassador Leuane Sombounkhan at the launching of Lao Airlines at Dusit Thani Manila. ??I am hoping this may help in maintaining our friendship and understanding.?

Air Innovative Travel and Tours is the official Passenger Sales Agent of Lao Airlines which is exclusive to the Philippines. Samy A. Syed, president and chief executive of the company, believes in the tourism industry of both Laos and the Philippines.

??When I first visited Laos, I immediately fell in love with its tourist attractions and its humble people. The security and safety in Laos are excellent, as proven by its zero-percent crime rate,? says Syed.

?Lao Airlines now gives me a chance to market Laos to the Filipino people. Vast nature activities are available, and the nightlife there is amazing, too. Luxurious hotel accommodations are offered at very low prices, and you can eat the whole day for only $3.?

Laos is located between rugged mountains and the fertile low lands of the Mekong River. Its European and Asian cultures give visitors a unique experience. This hypnotic haven certainly has retained its Old World charm. Modernity has yet to infiltrate this sleepy destination, where temples and religious affiliations blend with the rural foundations of the city. This land of mountains, mists, untamed natural beauty and peaceful temples is made perfect with its unrivalled peace and serenity.

??Before, there were no direct flights from Manila to Vientiane and vice versa. Travelers have to go to Bangkok, Thailand first before they could go to Vientiane, Laos. And that, of course, was very expensive. Lao Airlines and Air Innovative Group are coming up with great packages, and trips to Laos could be availed conveniently with the help of Cebu Pacific Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Thai Airways up to Bangkok,? Syed says.

Reservations will be available next month.
