Valley Golf suspends DAR chief, expels foe

AGRARIAN Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman had his golf club membership suspended for two years over a brawl involving his two sons, who are accused of beating up a 14-year-old boy, the club announced yesterday.

Pangandaman will not be allowed to set foot on the Valley Golf and Country Club until January 2011 ?because of the disorderly conduct of his guests,? club corporate secretary Teofilo Abejo told a news conference.

The golf club also expelled the injured boy?s father, Delfin de la Paz, 56, ?for instigating the brawl that occurred.? It found that he had started the fracas by hitting Nasser Junior with an umbrella.

Pangandaman?s brawling sons, Nasser Jr., 27, and Mohammed Hussein, 30, were banned for life from the golf course in Antipolo.

The case, which is now being investigated by state prosecutors, caused a public embarrassment for Mrs. Arroyo?s administration for alleged abuse of privilege. Witnesses alleged a 14-year-old boy golfer was repeatedly punched in the face by the Pangandaman sons.

Pangandaman Sr. was forced to apologize in public for the involvement of his sons in the brawl.

Nasser Pangandaman Jr. is the mayor of Nasiu in Lanao del Sur. Family members were unavailable for comment yesterday.

Both families have filed police complaints for physical injuries and verbal abuse.

Witnesses said the fight started after a supposed breach of etiquette on the third hole, when the Pangandaman sons passed the De la Paz family on golf carts to tee off on the fourth hole. AFP
