| Guiao: Burger King a title contender
By Rey Joble YENG Guiao hardly hesitated the moment the coaching position of Burger King was offered to him. In fact, he’s more excited than ever. “This is a championship-caliber team,” Guiao told Standard Today, referring to Burger King, the new name of the Air21 Express starting the Reinforce Conference this March. “They have the materials and no doubt the talent. The only thing that keeps them short from going all the way is consistency.” And consistency is one thing which Guiao will be instilling to this squad teeming with talent from top to bottom. The multi-titled mentor will inherit a team that has figured in the best-of-seven finals last year against Barangay Ginebra. Holdovers like Arwind Santos, Gary David, Niño Canaleta, Wynne Arboleda, JC Intal, Homer Se, Doug Kramer and Marvin Cruz have certainly made the Express a crack squad, but player movements initiated by the management certainly made the team a lot better. Among the players recruited by the Express recently were burly center JR Quiñahan, veteran slotman Don Allado and former Red Bull stalwarts Cyrus Baguio and Celino Cruz. For Guiao, handling a talented team like Burger King would be a perfect opportunity to bring back his winning ways. He resigned as coach of Red Bull two weeks ago after nine years capped by three championships. |
