Cues for the ‘shopaholic’ By Carla Mortel What’s a self-confessed “shopaholic” to do with the economic downturn forcing spending money to shrink? Do you go cold turkey and wait out the year or do you close your eyes and max out your credit line? Now, do not fret and throw a fit at the situation. Put on your thinking cap and create quick-fixes for that next high from your shopping spree. During the global crunch, one does not need to look dowdy and left wearing last season’s clothing line. With the latest trends and style in mind, march on and spend. The last thing we need is everybody scrimping and letting inventory sleep on the shelves. As this is extra-ordinary times, do not be afraid to bend a little and initiate extra-ordinary measures on your next shopping binge. While it is now silly to spend outrageously large sums of money for that label dress, bag and shoes, choose purchases that bring more value. Check out local brand names that are highly competitive in style and quality. If you cannot really make that sacrifice, buy that I-will-die-if-I-don’t-have-it item and have the store deliver your purchase at your doorstep if you are sensitive to your neighbors’ quips. There is also no need to mark your calendar of every season sale. Make sure your wardrobe has staples with classic designs and colors and then, pick-up accent pieces with this season’s trends and designs. That way you can transform into a recession-chic fashionista without having to brave the mob during mall sales. Colors of the Season Summer is right around the corner and we need to look hotter than the temperature. Whether by the waterfront or stuck in the office, the season usually calls for wearables with bright colors and light materials. For this year, here are the colors to wear to set you apart from the crowd. Wear clothing with hues of blue. The most dramatic hue would be deep aquatic tones on shimmering material. Deep aquatic blue in silk would be the best coupled with flattering silhouettes. If you go with grays and neutrals, accent them with neon colors. Yes, the 80’s colors are back with a vengeance. You can also use these colors on acid wash denim that is creeping back into the fashion scene. For a more distinct look, mix it up with a tribal look. Think earth tones in brown, yellow ochre and maroon red. You can match this with metal tones of gold, silver and bronze. Tribal prints and accessories will also go well to add interesting focus on your outfit. Check this out at SM Classic checks and plaids are currently having a fashion moment as they make a comeback at SM! Inspired by all the stylish buzz around the Gossip Girl series, plaid is ready for a lot of pattern play ranging from the preppie schoolgirl look (think Clueless) to GG’s on the town glam to the classic vibe of timeless glen plaid pieces. Layer a short skirt with a white shirt and vest, or wear a breezy dress with lights for a pop princess look - there are a lot of fun fashion possibilities with plaids. Wearing checks, on the other hand, is so cool and so now. Pretty pastel gingham patterns have the fresh clean look of a summer’s day in the country . . . windowpane checks make way for bolder statements . . . classic black and white checkered pieces get a fresh new look with bright accessories. |
