Van pins Ateneo pupil to death

A fourth-grade pupil at the Ateneo de Manila Grade School Loyola Heights died while his nanny and younger sister were hurt in a traffic accident inside campus late Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Ten-year-old Julian Carlo Miguel ?Amiel? Alcantara was pronounced dead at the New Era Hospital due to severe fractures.

His nanny, Tata Suarez, 65, was seriously hurt when a 2000 Toyota Hi-Ace van (CRW-705) being driven by Ma. Theresa Torres, 37, of 36 Matthew St., Saint Charbel Executive Village on Mindanao Ave., hit the victims while on their way to have some snacks at the school cafeteria.

SPO2 Jun Cuaresma, case investigator, said Suarez managed to push the other child, Hannah, 7, to safety upon sensing the impending danger.

Cuaresma said Amiel was walking alongside his nanny and sister when the accident occurred at about 4:20 p.m.

Torres claimed she was next in the queue of cars, waiting for her child near the main gate.

Torres was brought to the District Traffic Unit Section 3 where charges against her were being prepared. The Alcantaras, of 40 Matimtiman St., Teachers Village East, meanwhile, declined to give their comments.

?We are charging her with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injuries and damage to property,? Cuaresma said in an interview. Joel M. Sy Egco
