| Brodett told to pay P26 million
THE Court of Tax Appeals has ordered Philcomsat Holdings director Phillip Brodett to pay P26 million in capital gains and documentary stamp taxes that it says he has failed to settle plus fines. The tax court said Brodett transferred 500,000,000 shares of Liberty Mines Inc. to six people and made P4 million out of the transaction. It said Brodett got a tax exemption by claiming the transfers were merely to trustor from trustee, but Internal Revenue later discovered that he actually received P9 million from the transferees as against the P5 million in subscription cost of the shares. The tax court upheld Internal Revenue and dunned Brodett a total of P26 million in back taxes and fines. Brodett is the uncle of one of the men accused of selling illegal drugs and are known as the ?Alabang Boys.? He is being subpoenaed by the Supreme Court?s Independent Fact-Finding Committee for admitting he contacted Justice Undersecretary Ricardo Blancaflor to gain the release of the accused from government custody. |
