The Country Club wants big impact

By Adriano Flores

DAVAO City?Armed with course experience, The Country Club is ready to take on a new challenge as it makes its debut in the Philippine Airlines Interclub beginning tomorrow.

Three of its players?Ferdie Aunzo, Rufino Bayron and Peter Villaber?are hometown heroes and are expected to bear much of the weight in the scoring department especially when they play in the treacherous Apo Golf Club course.

?After consulting with coach Bong Lopez, I know that these three guys are the best bets because of their familiarity of the local grass, tree-lined fairways layout of Apo,? said TCC team captain Freddie Mendoza.

JR Tanpinco, Lopez?s assistant coach in the International Container Terminal Services Inc. squad, where the TCC participants come from, and new recruit from Cagayan de Oro Art Arbole, will most likely join the Apo roster based on their superb short-game skills.

TCC?s second five will consist of national team member Tonlits Asistio, Anthony Fernando, Dante Beciera, jungolfer Jobim Carlos, and Joey Huerva. They?ll be playing at the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club.

?We want to create a big impact on our first try. The boys are eager to compete and that?s a big plus for us.  Hopefully, we could compete at a very high level for four days,? Mendoza also said.

Actually, the entry of TCC is a welcome change because it is expected to battle rival Canlubang for the coveted crown, sparking an image interest for the PAL Interclub.

Tournament director Buddy Resurreccion explained that the showdown between these two powerhouse teams with the winningest records (Canlubang 4 and Luisita 8) was the newsmaker last week.
