| Sweeties break away by 18 points
By Adriano Flores DAVAO City? The law of averages finally caught up with Canlubang Thursday in the 23rd seniors? edition of the 62nd Philippine Airlines Interclub Golf Tournament. Coming off three consecutive runner-up finishes behind Canlubang, Luisita finally had the lead?an 18-point one at that after the initial round. For this, the Sweeties from Tarlac City can thank Iggy Clavecilla, who topscored with 56 points under the Molave point system at the Rancho Palos Verdes course. ?Everything was easy target for me today,? said Clavecilla. Starting at the back nine, he got inspired with an eagle on the 12th hole, a monster 500-yard par-five, where he hit a 160-yard second shot (using a 7-iron) that landed about two feet from the cup. He had three birdies on nos. 1, 3 and 7, but dropped three with a double bogey on the sixth and a bogey on the ninth. Together with Pepot I?igo?s 55 and Richie Garcia?s 49, Luisita assembled 158 points that set up a new, single-round score record by topping the 156 made by Del Monte in 2004. The Sweeties? fourth man, veteran Bong de Guzman, managed 44 but did not count in the four-to-play, three-to-count format. |
