Cops assert exclusive use of uniforms

THE National Police is urging the Commission on Higher Education to order schools that offer criminology courses to stop their students from wearing official police uniforms.

National Police Chief Jesus Verzosa has sent letters to the Commission on Higher Education and the concerned schools because he had observed that some students, particularly Criminology students, are using the same color, fabric and design used in police uniforms.

Verzosa said that Section 2 of Executive Order 297 prohibits the use of the National Police uniform, insignia and other attachments ?by any person who is not a member of the uniformed Philippine National Police personnel.?

Chief Supt. Nicanor Bartolome, police spokesman, said the dialog between the National Police and deans of different universities will be continuing until the matter is resolved.

He said that it will be for the protection of the students considering that criminals or insurgents, particularly the New People?s Army, might mistake them for real cops. Romie A. Evangelista
