CANLUBANG?Singapore threatened to dominate the WWWExpress-DHL National Amateur Golf Championships as Jerome Ng and Quincy Quek took the 1-2 spots with a pair of 71s in the third round at the north course of the Canlubang golf complex yesterday here. Ng, a mainstay of the Singapore national team, broke out of a tie with Antonio Asistio with birdies on all but one of the four par-3 holes, but missed gaining a big margin going into the final round with bogeys on nos. 12 and 13 for a 34-37 card. But his 216 aggregate proved enough to net him the solo lead, one stroke ahead of Quek, the reigning Putra Cup individual champion and Singapore?s no. 1, who played steady under tough playing conditions with a 35-36 round in a tie with reigning national titlist Ferdie Aunzo at 217. Aunzo, whose first two rounds were marred by sputtering finishes, came charging home this time, stringing three straight birdies from no. 14 for a 37-34 to stay in the hunt for the crown in the 72-hole championship sponsored by WWWExpress and DHL. Ng and Quek?s rounds also gave Singapore a five-shot victory over the hosts in team competition as they pooled a 433 after a 142. The RP bets, with Aunzo and Jessie Balasabas combining for 143, finished with a 438, while Korea placed third with a 455 in the 54-hole event put up WWWExpress chairman Rod Feliciano. But Aunzo will go all out to foil the Singaporeans? sweep bid in the event conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines as he goes up with Ng and Quek in the championship flight today. ?I will try my best to stop them and I hope to sustain my strong finish today,? said Aunzo, the spearhead of the ICTSI-backed golf team playing in his second-to-last tournament as an amateur. |
