| Alabang Boys? prosecutor rebuked
By Rey E. Requejo and Roy Pelovello THE three-member committee looking into bribery allegations in the case of the ?Alabang Boys? went on executive session yesterday at the request of the parents of two of the suspects who were willing to open their bank accounts to scrutiny. At the House of Representatives, State Prosecutor John Resado escaped detention after the House oversight committee on dangerous drugs had a change of heart and gave him a reprimand instead. Para?aque Rep. Eduardo Zialcita wanted Resado cited for contempt and detained at the House for what he said were ?straight-faced lies? he told the committee. After an executive session, the lawmakers relented and let Resado off with a reprimand. ?However, this being the season of love, Valentine?s Day, the committee in the spirit of the season has decided to amend our motion and so I would like to file an amended motion that Prosecutor Resado be heavily reprimanded by the committee for making such inconsistent statements,? said Cebu Rep. Antonio Cuenco. Cuenco?s motion was approved by the House panel, but Zialcita spoke to put on record his observation. ?I have been a congressman for seven years and this is the biggest lie I have seen all throughout my seven years,? Zialcita said. Richard Brodett Sr. and Joe Tecson, fathers of suspects Richard Brodett and Joseph Tecson, respectively, said they were willing to subject their accounts for scrutiny by the panel headed by former Supreme Court Justice Carolina Grino-Aquino. The Aquino commission was seeking the details of the bank accounts of parents of the two drug suspects who allegedly paid bribe to prosecutors in exchange for the dismissal of the drug- dealing charges against them. The elder Brodett said he would issue a waiver so his accounts in the Bank of Commerce, Banco de Oro and Export Bank could be examined. The panel said the examination of the bank accounts would cover transactions that took place from September to December in 2008. Jacqueline Verano, one of the lawyers of the Alabang Boys, sought an executive session after she revealed that her clients were willing to divulge details of their accounts. Justice Undersecretary Fidel Exconde denied reports that he tipped off the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency that State Prosecutor John Resado dismissed the case against the suspects Brodett, Tecson and Jorge Joseph. Exconde said he does not know anything about the bribe money. ?I was shocked when I read that news article. I have never called PDEA, unless the issue falls under our jurisdiction. These accusations are untrue and unfounded.? ?I never received any gift, bribe or money in connection with this case,? he added, denying that he was bribed to influence the decision. Justice Undersecretary Ricardo Blancaflor?s executive assistant Janet Payoyo also testified that Resado approved the forwarding of the draft release order to Justice Raul Gonzalez. Upon receiving the draft of the release order from lawyer Felisberto Verano, Payoyo said that she called up Blancaflor who told her to check with the prosecutor in charge. When she read it to Resado, the state prosecutor said in the vernacular, ?I think it?s okay for the signature of the secretary.? |
