Tiu shatters record, bags drag-race crown

CLARK, Pampanga?Jonathan Tiu of JCT-Blanche Racing saved the best for last as he pulled off another record-breaking feat to capture the overall crown in the 2008 Pagcor Drag Racing Championships-Northern Series at the Clark International Speedway Drag Strip here.

It was his third straight crown after clinching back-to-back titles at the Batangas Racing Circuit. The win also gave him a big start in the kickoff of the 2009 San Mig Coffee National Drag Racing Championship-National Trophy Series, sponsored by Pagcor Sports, San Miguel Corp., Pilipinas Shell, San Mig Coffee, Yokohama, Aeromed and the Clark Development Corp.

But what made his feat more impressive was his new, all-time fastest quarter-mile record of 9.223 seconds in turning back multi-titled Cebuano David Lim of DGL Motorsports.

Tiu wrapped up the series with a total of 50 points, while Go went home with the overall runner-up honors with 25 points. Vanni Garcia of W. Autosport-Vannitec and retired US Serviceman Ken Kepner of AHRA shared third place with 15 points apiece.

The championship round also witnessed a rare family affair when Edgar Go, a former drag racing champ, and his two sons?Ed Christian and Ed Christopher?all went home with trophies.

Edgar Go, the mayor of San Mariano, Isabela, relived his glory days when he clocked 11.486 aboard a borrowed Honda Chop Top from Blanche Racing teammate Walter Pazon to rule the Pro class right in his first comeback race, just a few ticks ahead over Why Why Dagondon?s 11.934 seconds.

Ed Christopher placed third in the same class with a time of 10.943 seconds.

Ed Christian bagged his first season triumph when he registered 11.042 seconds for the Quick 8 All-Motor plum against John Ryzia of Garage Power who clocked 11.621 seconds on his V8 classic Chevrolet with Mayor Edgar Go ending third.

Still, it was Pepi Santos of H3 Motorsports who clinched the overall Pro class plum with a total of 30 points over runner-up and teammate Edwin Cayco and Ryzia, who wound up with 20 and 15 points, respectively.
