Alabang Boys deny drug bust

TWO of the three suspects in the ?Alabang Boys? case yesterday told a fact-finding panel that there was no actual buy and bust when they were apprehended last Sept. 20 by agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in separate operations.

Making their first public statement since their arrest, suspects Richard Brodett and Joseph Tecson debunked the claim of the PDEA that they were arrested in a sting operation. Brodett said the PDEA men did not introduce themselves as agents at first and only did so when they were on the way to their office.

Brodett told the three-member panel chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Carolina Grino-Aquino that he was home in Ayala Alabang when Jorge Joseph, the third drug suspect nabbed by PDEA, called him up around midnight of Sept. 20 and invited him to ?Warehouse,? a club in Makati City.

He said that when he went outside to get something from his car, he heard the ?violent screeching of tires? and saw vehicles coming toward him. He said ?armed goons? came out of the cars.

?One of them dragged Joseph, pressed him on the side of his car and kicked him, and they were shouting invectives,? Brodett narrated.

He said he panicked, ran to his car and drove off. ?Then I heard somebody shout, saying ?p . . . ina mo, tigil! And I heard gunshots.? He was arrested after a brief car chase.

Brodett said that as he was being dragged out of his car, he was hit on the head with a rifle butt. When he fell, other agents took turns mauling him.

For his part, Tecson recalled that Joseph called him up to ask for help in a supposed production he was arranging for the Warehouse club.

Tecson said that he and Joseph agreed to meet at the parking area.

Tecson testified.

Joseph refused to testify before the committee, invoking his right to remain silent.

Meanwhile, members of the House committee on dangerous drugs yesterday questioned the creation of the three-member panel claiming this created a conflict of jurisdiction between the committee, the Justice Department and the independent panel.

Committee chairman Rep. Roque Ablan (Ilocos Norte)said, ?We have to show that Congress has the jurisdiction to hear this (matter) in committee hearings.? Roy Pelovello, Rey E. Requejo, Rio N. Araja
